THE AGRO CONNECTION

ABOUT US

Agro Connection is an international initiative that aims to connect people who want to push the boundaries of knowledge about agriculture, facilitating exchanges between students from different countries, promoting trips, research programs and generating opportunities for students and professionals in the field. agricultural.

Agro Connection has a team of Brazilian scientists at the beginning of their careers and students from several universities and the agricultural industry (Kansas State University, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, University of Georgia, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria , Bayer Crop Science and BASF), working on outreach approaches via YouTube, podcast, Instagram and other social media venues.

In less than two years, our YouTube videos about the US corn and soybean crop reached 4,600 subscribers and nearly 200,000 views. As part of the YouTube program, in 2021 and 2022, Agro Connection traveled to eight US states (KS, MO, IN, IL, IA, MN, SD and NE), three times a year, to assess the harvest and talk to farmers about the challenges and opportunities in corn and soybean production, as well as sustainable soil management.

Our podcast has over 9,000 downloads and 37 episodes, including six special episodes on soil health (soil chemistry, nutrient management, soil microbiology, soil physics, cover crops and more).

Agro Connection recently won first place nationally in the podcast category and second place in the video/internet category as part of the Brazilian Most Admired Award by the Agribusiness Press and Best Audiovisual Educational Material 2022 by the American Society of Agronomy (ASA).

Carlos Bonini Pires (TRAVEL DIRECTOR)

Born in Panambi/RS, he is doing Ph.D. in Agronomy and Soil Science at Kansas State University, United States. He holds a degree in Agronomy from the Federal University of Santa Maria (2016) and a Master’s in Soil Science from the same university (2018).

His doctoral research focuses on testing agricultural practices to improve soil health and increase crop productivity. Carlos is conducting on-farm studies in the state of Kansas – USA, to measure and communicate the benefits of different soil management strategies to generate data-driven recommendations to increase crop productivity and sustainability.

Also involved to an extent, Carlos has organized and participated in field days on soil health to share his data and raise awareness among rural producers about the importance of making agriculture more resilient and sustainable. In addition to working on his PhD, Carlos is also a technical coordinator for a farmer-to-farmer network (on-farm research network) and assistant professor of Precision Agriculture at Kansas State University.

He was recently awarded the Kansas Corn Next Generation Scholarship by the Kansas Corn Commission for his work with farmers. He is President of the Associação dos Estudantes Brasileiros and was Vice President of the Association of Graduate Students in Agronomy at Kansas State University.

At the national level, Carlos is a member of the graduate student committee of the American Society for Agronomy (ASA) and the American Society for Soil Science (SSSA). He has experience presenting works and participating in conferences in several countries such as Brazil, United States, Peru, South Korea, Scotland, among others).

Rafael Ramon (PODCAST DIRECTOR)

Born in Vista Alegre do Prata, RS, he is an agronomist and specialist in modeling and environmental behavior of pesticides at BASF. The son of small farmers and raised in family farming, he developed his passion for agriculture at an early age.

He left home at age 13 to study at Colégio Agrícola de Veranópolis, where he graduated in 2008. Later, he obtained the degree of Agricultural Engineer (2015) and Master in Soil Science (2017) from the Federal University of Santa Maria.

In 2021, he concludes his doctorate at two universities under the co-supervision regime, through the Postgraduate Program in Soil Science at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul/BR and at the School of Doctorate in Applied Mechanics, Energetics, Materials and Earth Sciences at University of Paris-Saclay/FR, developing research on soil erosion, soil chemistry, sedimentology, traceability of sediment sources, siltation and contamination of river waters.

Since 2010, it participates in the execution of research and extension projects related to the aforementioned areas of Soil Science, with emphasis on soil erosion processes and their impacts on the hydrographic basin scale, through the monitoring and modeling of hydrology, sediments and water flows. nutrients.

In addition, he has experience with modeling hydrological processes, erosion, contaminant dynamics and carbon at the landscape scale, with projects developed in Brazil and several countries in Europe.
